DisneyWorld has always been a special place to me. I took my first plane ride there with my family when I was 9 years old. It's where I spent my honeymoon and it will be my daughter's first plane ride. I have so many fond memories; feeling the warm air in April, sitting by the bar at the pool ordering a hot dog (seeing I was way too young to order a drink), getting out of the heat even if it was on the ride 'It's a Small World,' getting called up on stage at the Hoop Dee Doo show, having the biggest worry be what time the shuttle bus was coming, riding on the monorail, watching the fireworks, and seeing everyone around you smile. It truly is a magical place for all ages.
This summer my daughter turns 5 and we are going for the first time as a family. I cannot wait. It's been 9 years since our last trip to Disney (3 weeks before 9/11). Last year I started researching airlines, hotels, places to eat, etc., so most of everything has been done for a while. I'm not the most organized person, but I do a great job planning events. I see the big picture and then work on the little touches. We've received some criticism from friends and family because we're traveling in August, but it really is the best time for our family and that's exactly what I tell them. It's cheaper to travel to Disney in the summer, the crowds are minimal, there is no stress in returning home and having to plan or correct papers, my daughter doesn't loose instruction time at school, it's not one of the busier times at work for my husband who is a store manager, and I don't have to worry about traveling to or from the airport due to snow storms.
I'm really looking foward to the end of school so I can concentrate on those little things, like making a list of items we'll need to bring with us.

Hi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteSounds like Disney has a lot of meaning to you. I have yet to go, but hope to soon with my two boys, ages 3 and 4, in a couple of years. I am also heading to Florida this summer and I have faced criticism too. I agree with you..no deadlines, no schoolwork = vacation. Since this was your first draft, I thought it might be cool if you started off with pretending that you are on one of your favorite rides there. A description of what you see, smell, hear, etc. Make us feel like we are there with you. Then go into the history and the new memories you will be making. This is just an idea. I can't wait to read the final draft!! :)
Great idea Megan! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThose who leave work at work don't fully understand that you can't just leave on vacation when you are a teacher. They have no idea, even family. So good for you do what works for you and your family.
ReplyDeleteIn the piece to add to what Megan said, (your post brought back some very special memories of when we took my daughter 12 years ago, and it seems the magic is still alive) the scene wher you are at the bar to order a hotdog, adding how it made you feel and maybe some detail like your leggs swinging as they did not touch the ground or swiveling at the counter. Something else to show the youthful pride and excitement. The electric light parade was always a favorite of ours, and what a way to end a day at Disney or a final view of the fireworks over the castle would close the past nicely and give a smooth transition to your hopes for the magical experience for your daughter.
Just my two cents.
Kathy, Sounds like a special place, actually, I know it is from the way you describe it. We've been to Disney in August, and it is hot and muggy, but we love it! Hey, being from New England, the winters are too long to worry about the heat, right? I remember one of the things we battled while we were there was our exhaustion. The kids would "go and go" and my wife and I would have to muster up our energy to stay up with the boys. As I look back on it, they kept us going rather then the other way around! It was so cool! I remember saying to my wife that we needed a vacation because of our vacation! As we look back, the boys had such great times and we think about the time there with such good memeories. Great entry and good luck.
ReplyDeleteConrad, the last time I went to Disney (on my honeymoon), I felt like we had to go to a park or two everyday and by 8:00 in the morning. To get our money's worth, I felt like we had to eat three good size meals a day and stay in the parks until they closed. We stayed at the Coronado Springs and only swam in the pool one evening. There was so much more at the resort itself that we didn't even get a chance to see it. From that experience, my husband and I have said that we need to do things differently next time. This summer we plan on spending at least 2 days just hanging out around the hotel. I hope it goes well.
